DESCRIPTION:Professor Rob McWilliams has led an interesting life. A musician and composer\, playing trumpet\, flugelhorn and piano\, he has been part of the jazz scene for many years\, originally playing professionally in Melbourne with artists such as Wilbur Wilde and Paul Grabowsky. \nHis studies and high level of musicianship led him to the USA where he took up the post of Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin\, Oshkosh and ended up as Head of Music there for several years. As a teacher he has presented at major music conferences in Japan\, Hong Kong\, the UK\, Singapore\, Europe\, China and Australia and is a published author. As a musician he has performed with many jazz greats including Nat Adderley\, Vincent Herring\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Eddie Daniels\, Ed Shaughnessy and Dale Barlow – a resume that is the envy of many an Australian jazz musician! \nA talented musician\, composer and arranger\, Rob has had many opportunities over the years to create and perform his music to audiences all over the world. \nNow living back in Australia\, he works for Yamaha Music conducting music workshops around Australia as well as teaching at the Jazz Music Institute in Brisbane\, conducting\, composing\, arranging music and performing regularly around Australia either as a side man or with his own jazz ensemble. Though he is a Professor with an incredible and impressive Curriculum Vitae\, he is a warm and down-to-earth performer with a genuine connection to the audience\, bringing the music alive. \nThis masterful musician in now bringing his music to the Sunshine Coast\, performing with his band at The Jazz Sessions at The Presynct on Thurs 17th Sep. First mentored at just 10 years old by jazz legend Bob Sedergreen\, Phil went on to become a familiar name on Melbourne’s jazz circuit\, performing at iconic venues and major festivals before relocating to the Sunshine Coast in 2023 bringing a wealth of experience with him. Phil has performed at Melbourne International Jazz Festival\, Mont Kiara International Jazz Festival (Malaysia)\, Kuching Jazz Festival (Malaysia) and Stonnington Jazz Festival. As well as regularly performing at Melbourne’s jazz venues such as Dizzy’s\, Paris Cat\, Bennett’s Lane\, Bird’s Basement and the Jazzlab he has toured Australia and Asia with jazz\, funk and other acts over his 25 years as a professional musician. He has recorded two albums as a leader and appeared on many as a sideman. He performed on ABC TV’s Spicks and Specks with R’n’B sensation THNDO. \nPhil Hayter’s Illuminators is a bold and genre-blending ensemble\, fusing original jazz-hop funk with swinging hard-bop standards\, Latin flavours\, and deeply expressive ballads. After studying at the Queensland Conservatorium\, he became a prominent voice in the Brisbane scene before moving south to complete an honours year at the Victorian College of the Arts. DESCRIPTION:Tickets: $18 – $45 \nAward-winning jazz pianist\, songwriter and storyteller David Bentley teams up with tenor saxophone master Mark Spencer for an intimate and highly listenable night of smokin’ jazz\, cool blues and sharp musical conversation. Together they serve up a rich bouillabaisse of sound – drawing on sophisticated jazz\, New Orleans street music\, hip grooves and original compositions\, with the occasional sideways glance at the world and everything in it. \nDavid Bentley is best known internationally as the writer of In a Broken Dream\, the still-smouldering R&B classic first recorded by Python Lee Jackson and later taken to No.3 on the British charts. The song has since appeared in major films and documentaries\, and most recently resurfaced globally as Every Day\, a hit remix by Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky. On the night\, Bentley offers a laid-back\, jazz-inflected take on this iconic song alongside a wide range of original material. \nWhile his songwriting has travelled the world\, Bentley’s first love has always been jazz. Over a long and eclectic career he has performed with touring jazz greats including Milt Jackson\, Phil Woods and Mark Murphy\, held long-running residencies in Brisbane\, and fronted blues and jazz projects that became festival favourites. His recordings have been playlisted on ABC Radio National\, and his critically acclaimed trio albums The Leopard Lodge Sessions and The Lake Sessions showcase his distinctive blend of groove\, lyricism and harmonic depth. \nJoining him is Mark Spencer\, a tenor saxophonist renowned for his lyrical improvisation\, fiery funk excursions and masterful technique. A former finalist in the Jazz Saxophone Awards\, Spencer studied in New York with jazz greats George Coleman and Chris Potter\, and later taught at the Queensland Conservatorium. He has performed extensively overseas and throughout Australia. He has performed at Kyoto Jazz Fest\, Cork Jazz Festival\, Fort Lauderdale Jazz Fest\, Barcelona Jazz Festival along with many others; he has toured through the Tokyo jazz circuit\, played at many jazz clubs including in Melbourne\, New York\, Hong Kong\, the Bass Note in London etc and spent many years playing in residencies at the Ritz Carlton Osaka\, Japan\, the Sheraton Miyasaki\, Japan and Abu Dhabi Sheraton. Over the span of his career\, he has had the opportunity to play and record with many incredible musicians and singers including Melanie Charles\, Denise King\, Curtis Lundy\, Victor Lewis\, Bernie McGann and has supported artists such as Vince Jones and James Morrison. \n2017 saw him record an album in New York with bassist Curtis Lundy and legendary drummer Victor Lewis. The album\, ‘The Removalist’ showcases Ross’ love of the acoustic trio format and features original material along with sleek interpretations of classic jazz standards. Ross’ love of the jazz greats like Oscar Peterson\, Herbie Hancock\, Chick Corea\, and Bill Evans shines through in his playing as he artfully interprets jazz\, R & B\, funk and Latin classics and creates heartfelt and musically sophisticated arrangements. Ross’ performances take you on an exciting journey as he improvises and creates on the spot\, taking the music to new places and building anticipation of where you might end up. \nRoss’ jazz trio includes bassist Peter Walters and drummer Trent Bryson-Dean. These three individuals have extensive experience and are some of Australia’s most gifted ‘first-call’ musicians. This milestone will be celebrated at The Jazz Sessions\, celebrating this unique band’s legacy as pioneers of Brazilian music in Australia.\nThe View From Madeleine’s Couch sits at the vanguard of Brazilian-influenced music in Australia\, forging a glorious and lush sonic path through Brazilian jazz and bossa nova\, and writing award-nominated and award-winning music across a career that includes the release of two EPs and three full-length albums.\nFounded by musical and life partners Anje West (vocals and percussion) and Kym Ambrose (vibraphone)\, the band has carved out their own niche in Australia’s musical landscape. With Anje’s gorgeous Portuguese vocals and Kym’s mastery on the vibes\, the band’s truly unique sound has given them a voice in the contemporary global music scene that is uniquely theirs. There is no other band in the country that sounds like this. \nAfter a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2019\, the band recorded Bossa Nova Sunset Club\, at the acclaimed Yama-Nui Studios with very special guest\, and dear friend\, legendary Brazilian drummer Marcio Bahia. A household name in Brazil\, Marcio played for decades with Hermeto Pascoal\, along with almost every great name in contemporary Brazilian music. \nThe band’s first album in ten years honours the music and artists that have shaped their incredible and enduring career\, and also features some of the band’s original compositions\, including ‘Meu Anjo’\, which was nominated for a 2020 Queensland Music Award. ‘Bom Fazer’ from the band’s second album Casa da Boa Vida\, won best World Music Song at the QMAs in 2009\nNow they are bringing their world-class music to the Sunshine Coast\, performing at The Jazz Sessions on Sunday 25th September at Glass House Brewery\, Forest Glen.
