As well as regularly performing at Melbourne’s jazz venues such as Dizzy’s\, Paris Cat\, Bennett’s Lane\, Bird’s Basement and the Jazzlab he has toured Australia and Asia with jazz\, funk and other acts over his 25 years as a professional musician. He has recorded two albums as a leader and appeared on many as a sideman. DESCRIPTION:Professor Rob McWilliams has led an interesting life. A musician and composer\, playing trumpet\, flugelhorn and piano\, he has been part of the jazz scene for many years\, originally playing professionally in Melbourne with artists such as Wilbur Wilde and Paul Grabowsky. \nHis studies and high level of musicianship led him to the USA where he took up the post of Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin\, Oshkosh and ended up as Head of Music there for several years. As a teacher he has presented at major music conferences in Japan\, Hong Kong\, the UK\, Singapore\, Europe\, China and Australia and is a published author. As a musician he has performed with many jazz greats including Nat Adderley\, Vincent Herring\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Eddie Daniels\, Ed Shaughnessy and Dale Barlow – a resume that is the envy of many an Australian jazz musician! \nA talented musician\, composer and arranger\, Rob has had many opportunities over the years to create and perform his music to audiences all over the world. \nNow living back in Australia\, he works for Yamaha Music conducting music workshops around Australia as well as teaching at the Jazz Music Institute in Brisbane\, conducting\, composing\, arranging music and performing regularly around Australia either as a side man or with his own jazz ensemble. Though he is a Professor with an incredible and impressive Curriculum Vitae\, he is a warm and down-to-earth performer with a genuine connection to the audience\, bringing the music alive. \nThis masterful musician in now bringing his music to the Sunshine Coast\, performing with his band at The Jazz Sessions at The Presynct on Thurs 17th Sep. DESCRIPTION:It can be difficult to make a name for yourself as a saxophone player in today’s world\, but Brisbane’s award-winning saxophonist Andrew Butt has been making his mark on the world. Described by ABC Jazz as a stalwart of the Australian music scene\, Andrew has performed as a sideman for many of Australia’s leading jazz artists including James Morrison\, Emma Pask\, Tom Burlinson\, Dan Barnett\, Rhonda Burchmore and David Campbell\, but has also performed in his own right all around Australia and overseas\, touring extensively through Indonesia\, New Zealand\, China\, Europe and the USA. \nAndrew’s distinct sound and original compositions have seen his music featured on ABC Jazz Track and his Trio in demand for performances at major venues and festivals across the world including Le Baiser Salé & Sunset-Sunside – Paris\, the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz\, the Brisbane International Jazz Festival\, iF Jazz Café – Budapest\, U Malého Glena Jazz – Prague\, Tanks Arts Centre – Cairns\, Bennetts Lane and the Paris Cat Jazz Club – Melbourne. \nAndrew has drawn a lot of inspiration for his playing style from jazz saxophonist Paul Desmond. Paul Desmond was most well known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for writing one of the most well-known tunes in jazz – “Take 5”! A long-time collaborator with Dave Brubeck\, when asked about his distinctive light sound\, Desmond commented\, “I had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to sound like a dry martini”. \nDrawing from that influence\, Andrew is becoming recognised for his genius as a melodic improviser. His sense of space and time displayed through his compositions\, create a sense of longing and beauty. He has recently released a new album “Peregian”. This 2024 Queensland Music Award-winning album is inspired by themes that come out of everyday experiences\, friendships\, travels\, and love. The title track “Peregian” was inspired by his visit to our own Peregian Beach.
